What Part will Virtual Sizing Play in the Future of African Fashion?

We are mainly used to UK, EUP, etc. fashion size guides, and Africans have found a way of navigating these size guides, which were not initially designed for the African body. However, African fashion is gradually gaining ground in the contemporary fashion world.

In general, African attire is made to fit somewhat loosely for optimal comfort. African designs emphasise the body's inherent attractiveness as opposed to European designs, which hug the body. The clothing allows for airflow through the careful use of fabric and wide patterns.

African-sized charts cannot be readily translated into European charts due to these design principles. For instance, sizes 10 to 12 fit our medium size. so forth.

As a size recommendation, choose a range from the chart below that closest matches your measurements. Remember that African clothing is designed to fit loosely, so choosing a lower number will result in a better fit.

Measurement techniques

Measure around the widest region of the bust or chest by wrapping the measuring tape over the shoulder blades and under the arms.

Neck: Take a measurement around the neck as closely as you can get to the shoulder. Two fingers inserted into the tape will guarantee adequate ease for appropriate fitting.

Measure your waist at your natural waistline while wearing clothing.

Hips: Below the waistline, at the broadest region of your hips, measure your hip size.

Measure the inseam of a pair of pants from the crotch to the hem of the leg, using a pair of pants that fit well in length.

When the arm is extended forward, measure the sleeve from the shoulder blade over the elbow to the wrist.
